Edmonton is the second largest city and capital of the Canadian province of Alberta, located on the North Saskatchewan River in the central region of the province. It is the hub of Canada's sixth-largest census metropolitan area with a population of about 750,000. Most of the metropolitan population of Edmonton lives within the actual City, unlike many other cities that have multiple suburban cities surrounded by one main city. This has allowed Edmonton to maintain much of the region's suburban growth within the city and makes it one of the largest cities in North America by area.
Edmonton also serves as the northern anchor of the Calgary–Edmonton Corridor and is a major staging point for large-scale diamond mining and oil sands projects in northern Alberta and in the Northwest Territories. Edmonton is the cultural, governmental and educational centre for the region, and has been not only named "The Festival City, but is home to North America's largest mall, West Edmonton Mall. This was the world's largest mall for over 20 years until 2004.
Edmonton has traditionally been a hub for Albertan petrochemical industries, earning it the nickname "Oil Capital of Canada" in the 1940s. In fact, Alberta's has massive oil, gas, and oil sands reserves, only second to Saudi Arabia. Though, Edmondton now has a very diverse economy with major industrial sectors including technology giants IBM, Telus, Intuit Canada, Canadian Western Bank, BioWare, Matrikon, General Electric, and Stantec Inc.and more. There is also a strong biotech sector.
Edmonton also has a reputation as one of Canada’s premier research and education centres, anchored by educational institutions such as the University of Alberta as well as government initiatives. It has also become a major financial centre and home to Canadian Western Bank, ATB Financial, Servus Credit Union, TD Canada Trust and Manulife Financial.
